John Martin, 3 generations …
… from hops to hotels...

It all began back in 1909.
That was the year John V. Batthiany Martin, a 23-year-old British brewmaster, first arrived in Antwerp. He started out by importing the famous Irish stout 'Guinness' before creating, especially for the Belgians, Gordon Scotch Ale and the famous Martin's Pale Ale.
Twenty-five years later he signed an exclusive licence with Schweppes for Benelux and France. Thus, on the shores of a lake in Genval, in what would soon come to be known as the 'Castle Schweppes', John V.B. Martin developed a beverage that quickly made the rounds, the world-famous and much appreciated 'Indian Tonic'.

The years went by, ideas abounded, orders came flowing in, and his ever-growing range of beers and sodas flooded the European markets.

In 1966, the year of their father’s death, Andrew and John James Martin took over at the helm and kept a steady course as they steered through waters increasingly conducive to business development. From Paris, John J. Martin managed the French subsidiary of Schweppes, whose sales of Indian Tonic were spiralling.

In 1980 his eldest son, John Charles Martin, a third-generation Martin, took over the management of  the family business and came up with the idea – visionary at the time - of converting the 'Castle Schweppes' into a 5-star hotel hosting a conference centre: the by-now legendary 'Martin's Château du Lac'. The 'Martin's Hotels' hotel group was born!

The art of hospitality under the emblem of the kingfisher...
...the family flight to excellence...

Over the years, with John C. Martin holding the reins, the group has gone from strength to strength. It now boasts no fewer than 10 hotels and three restaurants, as well as the Martin'Spa, considered as one of Europe’s most beautiful spas.

Huguette Martin puts her distinctive and creative stamp on the specific atmosphere of each of these places, infusing each with a sense of well-being and serenity. Inspiration, refinement, attention to detail, ... those are only some of the words that fittingly describe her work. Her virtuosity in playing with colours, fabrics and lighting means that there are no two identical Martin's Hotels. Whether you are staying at Martin's Waterloo *** or Martin's Grand Hotel **** in Waterloo, at Martin's Manoir or Martin's Château du Lac ***** in Genval, at Martin's Red **** on the site of the Belgian Football Center in Tubize, at Martin's Relais **** or Martin's Brugge *** located in the "Venice of the North", or at Martin's Brussels EU **** in the European district of Brussels, you can see and feel the benefits of each of the different atmospheres that makes each hotel unique.

The family has always made it a point of honour to respect the authenticity of historic buildings when restoring them, as evidenced by the numerous press and television reports on Martin's Klooster **** in Leuven - a former monastery - and Martin's Patershof **** in Mechelen - a deconsecrated church – which has won rave reviews from Trivago as one of the ten most unusual hotels in the world!...

... Rewarding excellence...
... the media ... the Caius prize, EMAS certification, and most importantly, YOU ...

Through its patronage of the Musica Mundi courses and festival, with the participation of 60 young musicians that he has hosted every year for more than 15 years at Martin's Lido, Martin's Manor and the Martin's Château du Lac, John Martin and his team were awarded the Caius Culture SME Award 2012.

Besides his passion for music, he has always been a great admirer and defender of nature. So, only naturally, in a quest to respect our planet, John Martin and all his staff strive every day in each of the Martin's Hotels to protect the environment and reduce the carbon footprint of each action and gesture. Through the day-to-day efforts of all concerned, including you, our customers, Martin's Hotels is the first and only Belgian hotel group to have received the most demanding "EMAS" certification in European environmental standards.

And as we’re on the subject of standards, the 300 players within our group are very well acquainted with them! They have signed up to a corporate culture where everyone is perfectly aware of the role they have to play and puts all their talents at the service of quality. Each member of this ''Martin's Hotels” family is driven by this principle and is geared up to deliver excellence: the difference is in the detail, as they say, and that is how we aim to satisfy our guests!

Thanks to the dedication of this big family, well-being and creativity are the hallmarks of excellence that allow us to soar to new horizons full of promises and surprises ...

... We look forward to welcoming you soon ....
