Tourist attractions in the region

Martin's Rentmeesterij is a tourist attraction in its own right. The hotel forms part of a genuine architectural gem, which was built between the 13th and 18th century by the Teutonic Knights: a German religious order that originally cared for wounded crusaders and later assumed an active militarily role. Alden Biesen Commandery had its heyday between the 16th and 18th centuries. As the Chief Commandery in the area, it oversaw 12 other Commanderies. The Teutonic Knights were eventually expelled during the French Revolution and the building complex was sold to a private individual. The Belgian state finally purchased the property after a major fire in 1971. The Flemish government has since painstakingly renovated the heritage site, transforming it into a celebrated cultural, tourist and conference centre.  The buildings have been listed since 2000.

Alden Biesen Commandery annually welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors to its various events and attractions. The cultural centre indulges both local residents and tourists alike with a variety of exhibitions, concerts and operas. Its fully equipped infrastructure is also a powerful draw for companies and business professionals. The heritage site lends itself particularly well to meetings, conventions and banquets. The moated castle and its various outbuildings are within walking distance of Martin's Rentmeesterij. Indeed, these historical gems are readily accessible via the gardens, a pretty new footpath or by golf cart if preferred.

The region surrounding this magnificent heritage site is also bursting with activities. Nature lovers can visit numerous natural parks and orchards or make the most of several stunning cycling routes. In fact, two wheels is undeniably the finest way to explore this fascinating region. Bilzen is equally as alluring for those with a penchant for shopping (the shops in Bilzen town centre, Maastricht and Maasmechelen are only a stone's throw away) gastronomy, culture or history.
